CeBIT 2007 Gets A Day off

24 January 2007 - CeBIT will be a day shorter from next year in the face of cancellations from key foreign exhibitors such as Nokia and Motorola. The price structure for exhibitors would be changed and organizers would concentrate more on attracting foreign companies and orientate themselves more clearly toward trade visitors. Exhibitors' main complaints about the fair were high costs, an unclear concept and no real sense that the fair was more for trade visitors than for consumers. Rival German consumer-electronics show IFA, held annually in Berlin, has been growing as CeBIT shrinks. This year's CeBIT will run from March 15-21 in Hanover.

Cisco Sues Apple Over iPhone Name

11 January 2007 - Cisco Systems is suing Apple to prevent it from using the name iPhone for the new smartphone. Linksys picked up the iPhone name when it bought a company called Infogear Technology in 2000. Cisco's iPhones are telephone handsets designed for use on a VoIP network. Apple and Cisco have been in negotiations for about two years over Apple's desire to license the iPhone trademark. When Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone Tuesday at Macworld, Cisco had not yet received a signed trademark licensing agreement from Apple even though the two companies had been negotiating terms as recently as Monday night.

AMD To Lay Off 375 Employees

18 November 2006 - AMD will lay off 375 workers. The move will weed out redundant positions caused by AMD's acquisition Oct. 25 of graphics chip maker ATI Technologies. It could also give AMD extra resources in its competition with rival Intel. The company can gain the flexibility to do that by cutting redundant jobs in the sales and marketing and general and administrative (SG&A) departments. AMD has announced plans to combine its processors with ATI's graphics and chipset technologies to create a family of more integrated chips for PCs and other consumer electronics devices. Once it has launched those new chips, AMD might replace some of the lost positions.
