Skulltrail arrives

The ASUS Z7S WS workstation board is an Intel 5400 chipset solution for dual processor computing.

Dual LGA771 processor sockets for dual processor goodness! This board also uses digital PWM to power the processors.

The board has three PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots, but only the two red slots run at the full x16 speed, while the white one operates at only x8 speed. There is also one PCI slot and one PCI-X slot. The Z7S WS comes with its own MIO audio card. It is an add-on module which slots into the slot just before the first red PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot.

Six FB-DIMM slots supporting DDR2 800MHz memories.

Six SATA connectors on this board internally. The 4-pin ATX12V power connector is also situated here, which is near the edge of the board.

Let's take a look at the rear I/O. A legacy PS/2 connector is available for keyboards. There are five USB 2.0 ports, one Firewire port, two Ethernet ports and two eSATA ports.

Pricing? $1050 for the ASUS Z7S WS at Chamoxa!

More gigabytes for you?

The wait has finally ended with local distributor Achieva Technologies bringing in Western Digital's latest Caviar SE16 640GB hard disk.

It's a pretty odd capacity, but this is due to Western Digital's 320GB-per-platter drive technology. Western Digital has already been putting out single platter 320GB drives for a few months already.

Running on lesser platters is always a welcomed move as less heat and noise is produced. Not only that, sustained transfer rates of the drive are increased as each platter is of a higher density.

This drive is really selling fast at Bell Systems and Cybermind Computer House. You might not be able to get stocks this weekend though. The 640GB drive comes with a 5-year 1-to-1 warranty and goes for $150-odd, which works out to just 24 cents per gigabyte.

AMD tri-core and Eizo displays

Just came in too, is the AMD Phenom X3 8650 processor. It is a triple-core product, something that's more unique in the world of dual cores and quad cores.

It is clocked at 2.3GHz and has an interestingly sized 3.5MB worth of L2 and L3 cache combined.

Bell Systems has this processor in stock, but you need to buy it as a bundle with a motherboard.

Ever lost hope of finding really high-end LCD displays in Sim Lim Square? Eizo displays are now available at Chamoxa!

On display is the Eizo Flexscan S2100 21-inch LCD.

You can walk in to find out more about Eizo products and pricing.

A new Silverstone home for mATX solutions

The Silverstone SG02-F mATX beauty arrived in Cybermind Computer House only yesterday.

We wasted no time in checking out its interior.

Vented PCI slots for better ventilation now come as a standard part on all new Silverstone casings.

We have space for two 3.5-inch hard disk drives here.

On the other side is a low-speed 80mm Silverstone fan to cool the hard disk drives.

The power button is located at the corner on the top side.

There is sufficient cooling on the SG02-F. You can add two fans to the top, while the holes at the side are for natural ventilation.

If you're looking for a new mATX case, you could consider this new arrival.

The attack of the blacks by XFX

The fastest nVidia GeForce 9800 GTX and 9800 GX2 cards have hit the stores. Both XFX and eVGA offer very highly clocked models of both cards, but XFX got their cards in locally first.

The XFX GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB is clocked at a tasty 760MHz core, almost a full 100MHz faster than the reference clocks.

The XFX GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB clocks in at 700MHz core, 100MHz faster than a full reference model.

Both cards are still nVidia reference cards, just that they are clocked higher on custom BIOS by XFX.

The XFX GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB Black Edition is priced at $579 and is available at both Cybermind Computer House and Fuwell Technologies.

The XFX GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB Black Edition is priced at a tempting $969 and is available at Cybermind Computer House.

Here's part of XFX's GeForce 9800 family: 9800 GTX XT, 9800 GTX Black Edition, 9800 GX2 XT, 9800 GX2 Black Edition (from left to right). Not shown in this picture are the 9800 GTX, GTX XXX and GX2.

Stay tuned to www.vr-zone.com because both XFX Black Edition cards are already in our labs (hence the product shots) and we will be taking them for a spin next week.
