Green ASUS Supports PC Recycling Program

In 2004, 20-50 million tons of e-waste was produced worldwide, according to research carried out by Greenpeace. This will equal the total waste produced in Taiwan in 2 to 6 years time. In light of this, inappropriate disposal of IT-waste will no doubt cause irreparable damage to the earth we live on. At a press conference in commemoration of Earth Day (22nd April), ASUS and Intel, together with electronics retailer Tsann Kuen Enterprise, have announced plans for a collaboration to help the environment through a “PC Recycling for a Brighter Future” program – showing how the IT industry has taken the initiative to work together for collection and recycling of old laptops, PCs and LCD monitors in a bid to help the environment.

Green ASUS: The Leading Eco-Friendly IT Brand

In order to take corporate social responsibility and provide goodwill towards society, ASUS has led by example and formed an alliance with Intel and other non-profit organizations to implement the “PC Recycling for a Brighter Future” project.

“Emphasizing the eco issue and contributing to society are core values of ASUS.” said Jonney Shih, Chairman of ASUS. He also mentioned, “Through the four main tenets of Green Design, Green Procurement, Green Manufacturing and Green Marketing, ASUS will constantly strengthen the company’s environmental stance and prolong the product life cycle through recycling to protect the environment.”

ASUS not only took the initiative to produce lead-free products ahead of the EU’s directive on RoHS, it also established the Green ASUS certification, which contains higher standards than the trade union. This certification ensures that products need to abide by ASUS’ stringent inspection standards from design, procurement, manufacturing and marketing. This high requirement allowed ASUS to achieve Oekom’s (Europe’s longstanding environmental protection organization) affirmation in Environment Rating for IT and Computer Peripherals; and also helped gain the top position in environmental protection in global electronics in 2007.

”Good corporate responsibility towards society is one of the core values at Intel. Besides developing lead- and halogen-free processes for product development, Intel has been concentrating efforts to utilize recycled materials, water-saving resources as well. We are also continuously making improvements in innovative product design, like the 45 nanometer high-k gate process to produce processors that are more powerful and more energy efficient.” said Jason Chen, Country Manager of Intel Taiwan. “Moreover, this is in line with Intel’s promise to the “Climate Savers Computing Initiatives plan”, which details an initiative for global industry leaders to develop standards for energy efficient computer components and parts. Working with ASUS on the “PC Recycling for a Brighter Future” project is a perfect opportunity to extend Intel’s long-term commitment to environmental protection and to help bridge the digital gap in Taiwan.”

"Tsann Kuen advocates action-oriented environment protection, and seeks to utilize the 3C platform to help in environment-friendly and energy saving activities.” said Jerry Yen, General Manager of Tsann Kuen Enterprises. He adds, ”We hope to utilize our “0 carbon action” plan as this years main target, in order to encourage customers to help save the earth by purchasing more environmentally friendly merchandise.”

ASUS EPU for 80.23% CPU Power Savings!

The ASUS-developed EPU is the world’s first on-demand power saving microprocessor. This innovative power technology digitally monitors and automatically fine-tunes the CPU power supply with improved VRM efficiency under any loading for up to 80.23% CPU power savings. This translates into a single EPU motherboard saving up to 33,000 watts of electricity after one year's continuous operation – about 20.743 kg reduced CO2 emissions. For the “PC Recycling for a Brighter Future” project, consumers are encouraged to recycle their older devices at dedicated collecting points, like ASUS Royal Clubs, Tsann Kuen 3C chain stores and DF Recycle – where a discount voucher will be issued for each unit of desktop computer, laptop computer or CRT/LCD monitor handed in. All brands of these devices will be accepted, and after refurbishing, the working products will be donated to charity. This not only reduces the environmental concern in terms of IT-waste, it also allows these computers to gain a new life in the hands of the less fortunate – creating many benefits from just one exercise.
