We have received some preliminary performance numbers from CJ for Radeon HD 4870 and 4850 vs the current GeForce 9800 series lineup. Apparently, RV770XT with GDDR5 (160W) will run 1.3X faster than RV770PRO with GDDR3 (110W). Two key factors that contribute to the difference in performance between the 2 cards: a 100MHz core clock difference and a faster GDDR5 at 1.96GHz vs GDDR3 at 1GHz. Interesting, RV770PRO will run 1.25X faster than GeForce 8800 GT/9800 GT while RV770XT will run 1.25X faster than GeForce 9800 GTX. Read More >>

i had to log in to shed the light on the discussion about what "faster than 1.25X" means

it means whatever the speed of geforce 8800gt is times 2.5

what he meant to say is "it's 1.25X as fast as the geforce 8800gt. which would mean the speed of geforce 8800gt time 1.25

there is no opinion about it. unless you use some form of english that is used on some other planet, those are the facts

As already mentioned, you are probably just confused when converting a number value to a percent value.

It's just a matter of the English used to phrase the statement. 1.5x as fast as, and 1.5x faster than, is different imo.

3x3cUt0r, no offence but you fail when it comes to a simple mathematical calculation. If you entered "250" divided-by "100" into a calculator, it'll gives you "2.5" so show me how you get "1.5" when dividing "250" into "100".

Mathematically 0.01 is 1% which means 1.30 is 130%.

Err, I am sorry to say he is right. What is 1 x 1? It's still 1. What is 1 x 1.5? It's 1.5. Therefore if something is 1.5x faster then it means that it is 50% faster. If a car goes at 100mph then an object travelling at 1 times it's speed would also be traveling at 100 mph. Where as an object traveling 1.5x faster would be 1.5(100) which will be 150 mph. To convert it to percent it would be (150-100)/100 * 100% which is 50%. Hence, i think you are just confused between converting from number to percent.

1.5x faster than 100 mph isn't 250 mph, its 150 mph.

250/100=2.5.

Just a small note, something 1.3x faster isn't 30% faster, is basic math people, if my car is 1.5x faster than your and your runs at 100 mph then what my speed? 250 mph, if i say my car is 1x faster than your and you apply the math used here then its the same speed? NO it twice the speed. I have seen the same logic in many websites but that doesn't mean is accurated.
